In the summer of 2020, a family on a leisurely picnic near Brownie Creek, three and a half miles southeast of Packwood, Washington, stumbled upon an intriguing and potentially mysterious find. The patriarch, accompanied by his wife Ella and two children, made an unexpected discovery that has fueled speculation about the presence of Sasquatch in the area. The encounter occurred on July 24, marking a memorable moment during a family outing.

The Incident:

The family had embarked on a scenic drive along National Forest Road 48, facing some roadblocks due to lingering snow from the shadows of high rocky peaks. Undeterred, they decided to make the most of their day and set up a nearby picnic. The location was picturesque, with Brownie Creek flowing nearby, offering a cool turquoise pool and a culvert that caught the family's curiosity.

While exploring the sandy banks of Brownie Creek, the witness, whose identity remains undisclosed, narrowly avoided stepping into a massive footprint measuring at least 17 inches or more. Shocked by the size and implications of the print, the family quickly realized the potential significance of their discovery.

Observations and Follow-Up:

The witness promptly captured footprint images, providing valuable documentation for further investigation. A subsequent inquiry by BFRO Investigator Scott Taylor shed light on the incident's circumstances. The investigator highlighted the unique challenges faced by the family, including the presence of only one footprint and the inability to thoroughly search the creek bed due to the family's presence and the absence of suitable tracking conditions.

Despite these limitations, the witness's commitment to reporting the finding and sharing photographic evidence is commendable. The investigator also provided a size estimate, using the witness's foot as a reference, affirming the extraordinary size of the footprint and ruling out the possibility of it being human.

Local Sasquatch Lore:

The Cowlitz River Cluster, including the Packwood and Randle areas, has long been associated with Sasquatch sightings and encounters. The witness acknowledged the region's reputation but had never considered reporting their discovery until they revisited old photos on their phone.

The 17-inch footprint discovered along Brownie Creek adds another layer to the rich tapestry of Sasquatch lore in the Pacific Northwest. While the single footprint may leave unanswered questions, the witness's diligence in reporting the incident and sharing photographic evidence contributes to ongoing discussions and investigations into the elusive creature's existence. The incident serves as a reminder that even casual outings in the scenic wilderness of Washington State can lead to unexpected and intriguing discoveries.
